Equine Reiki

Reiki is a very gentle, though powerful, healing treatment and yields impressive results physically, emotionally and behaviourally.

Treatment options

Reiki healing

I work at a pace that your horse is comfortable with and use either a hands-on or hands-off approach. I balance his or her energy system and use the Reiki energy to specifically heal any physical or emotional issues that come to light during the session.

I use intuition and mind-work to guide me and communicate with the horse during the treatment, and can treat either in the stable, yard or the field.

Remote Reiki healing

Remote healing works on the ancient principle that we are all connected - we are all made of energy and part of a larger whole.

It is a beautiful way to heal and horses are very receptive to it as they understand how energy works in this way. I tend to get more in the way of communication from the horse when treating remotely. It is useful for treating horses who find unfamiliar humans unsettling and horses that are too far away for me to travel to.

How can Reiki help horses?

Reiki can help with physical, emotional and spiritual healing of horses. It can help with behaviour and management issues and benefit and aid recovery from illness and injuries.

Horses generally enjoy Reiki, becoming relaxed and even sleepy.
It is totally non-threatening to the horse, so even nervous and
highly-strung horses tend to accept it happily. In fact, horses are so open to it that they often move their bodies to where they feel they need the healing energy most. This makes them highly
rewarding to treat and the benefits are often very noticeable.

As touch is not necessary, and healing can even be carried out from a distance, it suits horses who have had their trust in humans broken or who are particularly sensitive or touch-shy.

What to expect

Incorporated into the first treatment session I use an analysis of your
horse's physical and psychological wellbeing, his or her lifestyle,
activities, nutrition and any other factors that you believe are important,
so that your horse's life can be looked at from a holistic point of view.

I am always guided by each horse as to how much to offer and how to pace the session. Horses usually need a few breaks to absorb the treatment
during a session and will let me know when to restart by asking me. It can be hands on or hands off - whichever your horse prefers. There is no
difference in the effect of the treatment.

Reiki is quiet and peaceful - I
stand beside or close to the horse and tune in to them and their energy
and use the Reiki and intuition to guide me.

What aftercare is advised?

The Reiki will carry on working for up to two days after the treatment and horses should ideally have 48 hours off any work, including lunging, following a treatment. If this isn't possible then at least a day off and then gentle work on the second day. Their system will be using a lot of energy in healing, releasing and rebalancing so ad-lib hay (if possible) and plenty of fresh water is advisable.

A course of three or more sessions is generally advised to really get to the root of any issues and provide a true foundation for healing. However, this is not set in stone and one session will certainly be beneficial.

Reiki is definitely not a spectator therapy! It is very quiet, slow, calm and peaceful. However, you can read the horse's body language as they have the treatment. Impressed by how her horse responded, one of my clients videoed him having a Reiki treatment and kindly gave permission for me to share the videos with you here.

Here we can see the horse taking the Reiki energy. He is fully relaxed, sleepy-eyed, gently blinking and moving his head whilst he absorbs the healing. You will notice that I work with the horse loose when treating - this gives them control over when and where they receive the treatment.

At the end of the session the horse blinks and licks and chews as he processes (sometimes they also do a lot of yawning). He then moves away which indicates either that he needs a short break to process further and then he will come back to ask for more, or that he has had enough healing for his needs today.

Harmony and intuition, the feelings that come from the heart as well as the head, are very important to incorporate when working with horses; they naturally choose a harmonious, co-operative and synchronous way of living. Tuning in to this whilst I work with them makes the results of my treatments even more sustainable.
